When Is The Right Time To Bring My Child To The Dentist?
The AAPD (American Pediatric Dental Association) recommends that kids see the dentist when they turn one year old, or whenever their first tooth comes out.
But if your child is older, the best time to bring them to the dentist is now! The sooner your little one starts seeing the dentist, the sooner you can set them up for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
How Do I Prepare My Child For Their First Dental Visit?
We recommend watching some YouTube videos or reading some books about dentistry so that your child knows what to expect.
We also recommend scheduling an appointment in the morning, when your child won’t be cranky or tired and in need of a nap. Bringing along some toys or comfort items, like a favorite blanket, can also help them feel more comfortable during their visit to Joshua Austin, DDS & Associates.
What Are Some Oral Hygiene Tips For My Kiddo?
First, make sure they're old enough to brush their own teeth. Kids can usually brush properly on their own when they're coordinated enough to tie their own shoes, at about the age of 6.
Then, we recommend moving on to “family brushing.” You can brush alongside your child to set an example and show them proper brushing techniques. This also allows you to monitor them to make sure that they're brushing their teeth properly.
