Periodontal Maintenance
San Antonio, TX

Close up of healthy gums and pearly teeth at Joshua Austin, DDS MAGD FACD in San Antonio, TXPeriodontitis involves a deep infection in the gums that can be life-threatening if left untreated. After getting your periodontitis taken care of, our dentists may begin doing periodontal maintenance cleanings as opposed to traditional cleanings. These are specific for your case and will help reduce the chance of recurring gum disease. Joshua Austin, DDS MAGD FACD offers both regular cleanings and periodontal maintenance and will help you understand which is optimal for the best oral health care.

What Is a Prophylaxis and How Does it Differ From Periodontal Maintenance?

Prophylaxis refers to regular cleaning that should happen every six months. Prophylaxis may be recommended if you have not suffered from periodontitis, or gum disease, bone loss, or an infection around your teeth. During each checkup, our dentists will check to ensure you have no bleeding, gaps that expose the roots of your teeth, or receded areas. They will also check for the mobility of your teeth. If you are cleared of having no bone or underlying gum issues, regular cleaning will continue to be recommended.

Regular cleaning removes soft plaque from your teeth and gum line, stains from the teeth and accumulated tarter, a hardening of soft plaque. These preventive cleanings will help ensure your oral health and prevent periodontal disease from occurring. For most people, a prophylaxis treatment and good oral hygiene care prevent gum disease from ever occurring.

Periodontal Maintenance Care

Periodontal disease, better known as gum disease, requires a special type of cleaning. If you have suffered from periodontitis, you have likely already had a scaling and root planing cleaning to remove it. However, once you have had gum disease, it is recommended you undergo periodontal maintenance care moving forward.

Periodontal maintenance is a deeper clean than what you would get in a regular cleaning. Periodontitis causes large pockets to form between the spaces of your gums and teeth, making it easier for plaque, tartar, and other debris to gather. Without proper deep cleaning, these bacteria and debris can cause inflammation, infection, and other severe health issues. Periodontal maintenance is more intensive and time-consuming than regular cleaning to ensure optimal oral health.

Unlike traditional cleanings, if you are prescribed periodontal maintenance care, you will have to see the dentist more often than every six months for your cleaning. Most sufferers of periodontitis require cleaning every three to four months, depending on the severity of their case. While it is more intensive, it is still a relatively pain-free process, but may require anesthetic to ensure you are comfortable during the treatment. An anesthetic is more likely if you have deeper pockets in your gums that require the dentist to go down further to ensure it is properly cleaned.

Periodontal maintenance care is also covered by most insurance providers, though a copay may be necessary. Our offices work with the insurance company to help alleviate costs as much as possible. Your dental health is important to us and you should not have to accept substandard care given a life-long prognosis of periodontitis.
