How Bad is Sugar for Your Child's Teeth?

Posted on 6/20/2022 by Office
How Bad is Sugar for Your Child's Teeth? There are two types of sugars, added sugar and natural sugar. Natural sugars come from fruits and vegetables while added sugars come from sweets and processed foods like pastries and soft drinks. The common table sugar is also an example of added sugars.

Is Sugar Bad for Your Child's Teeth?

When your child consumes sugar, the mouth produces an acid that helps in digestion of sugar. The acid then wears the enamel of your young one's teeth. This leads to several oral health problems explained below.

Effects of Sugar On Your Child's Teeth

Tooth cavities. When the enamel wears away, it results in tooth decay which progresses deeper into the tooth if not treated and forms a cavity. Your child may end up losing their tooth in the end.

Sensitive teeth. Exposed nerves due to tooth cavities results in your little one's teeth becoming sensitive. You may notice that they are not comfortable with taking hot or cold drinks.

Bacterial infections. Due to cavities, the inside of the tooth gets exposed to bad bacteria that causes infections. This greatly affects your child's oral health and the overall health.

Jaw and gum damage. Untreated tooth cavity is one way the gums get attacked by infections which then in severe cases progress to the roots of the teeth and spread into the jaw tissues causing damage.

Chipped or cracked teeth. When the enamel wears away, the tooth becomes weak and may chip or crack when subjected to pressure such as chewing hard foods. You might have seen children with only a fraction of their tooth left on the gum.

You should monitor your child's sugar intake and avoid getting those snacks and drinks with high amounts of sugars. Ensure they brush their teeth after every meal. Visit our clinic for pediatric dental checkups.
