It is amazing how we can bite through hard candy and crunchy almonds yet still have sensitive teeth. Unfortunately, some people have a long list of things that cause sensitivity in their mouths. If you are one of those people, you know the sensation of a hot beverage, a cold beverage, or a sweet treat. The discomfort can be a sharp pain or a dull ache. Regardless of the type of sensation, it is undoubtedly uncomfortable, and most people will want to avoid it.
What Caused That Pain?
There are many factors that lead to sensitive teeth. Some people have more sensitive teeth than others because they have thinner enamel. Enamel is the hard outer layer of your teeth, which is the only protective layer on your teeth. It is possible to wear down your enamel by brushing your teeth too hard. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush your teeth gently.
You may also have tooth sensitivity if you have whitened or bleached your teeth recently. It is common for your teeth to be sensitive a few hours after treatment, usually in your smaller teeth. This sensitivity should go away after a few days.
If you have bruxism, you may have sensitive teeth. Bruxism is a condition where you grind or clench your teeth. This often happens when you sleep. Talk to us about a mouth guard if you suspect you have bruxism.
Unfortunately, our gums recede with age. As gums recede, they expose the dentin layer of your tooth, as well as some dental nerves. This can cause tooth sensitivity.
