Treatments for Scurvy

Posted on 5/10/2021 by Office
Treatments for ScurvyScurvy is a rare disease in the developed world. Its prevalence in the USA has fallen below 10%, and today, only 7.1% of the population in the USA is affected by scurvy. The disease is caused by the severe deficiency of Vitamin C. At advanced stages, scurvy can cause bleeding from the gums, tooth decay, and premature tooth fall out.

Human beings cannot form Vitamin C in their bodies. We are completely reliant on our diet for our daily recommended intake of vitamin C. We absorb 90% of our vitamin C intake from the fruits and vegetables that we eat. According to the Dietary Guidelines of Americans, an average male adult over the age of 19 needs at least 90mg of vitamin C per day. Smokers need 35mg of vitamin C more than non-smokers.

Some of the best treatments for reducing the deficiency of vitamin C and hence treating scurvy are:

Fruits and Vegetable Rich in Vitamin C

We absorb most of the daily required vitamin C from our diet. Citrus fruits and fresh green vegetables are a rich source of vitamin C. Some of the fruits that can help treat scurvy are:

•  Grapefruits
•  Lemons
•  Limes
•  Kiwis
•  Oranges
•  Melons

Some of the fresh green vegetables that are a rich source of Vitamin C are:

•  Broccoli
•  Brussels
•  Sprouts
•  Cauliflower
•  Bell peppers
•  Spinach

Eating these fruits and vegetables, along with maintaining a healthy diet, can help treat scurvy.

Vitamin C Supplements

People who are unable to absorb Vitamin C naturally from their diets are prescribed Vitamin C supplements to make up for their deficiency. These vitamin C supplements are available in the form of tablets, capsules, chewables, liquids, powders, and even injections.

The recommended dosage for treating scurvy is 2 grams per day. If the condition persists, then over the period of the next 7 days, the dosage must be reduced to 500mg. In case the patient requires a vitamin C supplement for 1 to 3 months, then the supplement must provide 100mg of Vitamin C per day.

Some of the best vitamin C supplements that are available in the market are; Pure Encapsulations Liposomal Vitamin C Liquid, Life Extension Buffered Vitamin C Powder, and NOW Supplements Orange Chewable Vitamin C-500.
