Dangers of Using Mouthwash That Has Alcohol
Posted on 9/7/2020 by Office
Dangers of Using Mouthwash That Has AlcoholMost people believe that alcohol-based mouthwash is the best option for maintaining good oral hygiene. Though mouthwashes can help, alcohol-based mouthwashes are often more detrimental than they are beneficial. These mouthwashes reduces saliva content in your mouth, which comes with several negative effects on its own. In addition, alcohol-based mouthwashes have also been linked to cancer of the head and neck. Our office will give you information about mouthwash and recommendations for good alcohol-based mouthwash alternatives.

Saliva Reduction

The alcohol content in mouthwash can reduce the amount of saliva in your mouth. Your body actually uses saliva to break down food and other debris in the mouth. With a decrease in saliva production, this means that your body will have a more difficult time breaking down remnants of your meals. With these food particles left to sit on your teeth, bacteria are able to thrive. This puts you at risk of various dental health conditions. Therefore, alcohol-based mouthwash can actually contribute to issues often seen with poor oral hygiene, such as bad breath, gum disease, and cavities.

Cancer Risk

In addition, it is also believed that there is a correlation between frequent alcohol-based mouthwash use and head and neck cancer. This includes the oral cavity (mouth), pharynx, and larynx. Alcohol contains acetaldehyde, an organic chemical compound that has been shown to have carcinogenic (cancer-causing) activity. This compound has the potential to damage the body at both cellular and genomic levels. It is not a proven fact that these mouthwashes cause oral cancer or similar conditions.

However, there are non-alcoholic mouthwash alternatives that have shown no such side effects. These alternatives clean your mouth just as much yet they do not put you at risk for these other conditions. Contact us for more information about alcohol-based mouthwashes and their alternatives.
