Which Cleans Better: An Air Flosser, or a Water Flosser?

Which Cleans Better: An Air Flosser, or a Water Flosser? Our team – as well as any reputable team of dental professionals – recommends brushing twice a day and flossing daily. In addition to this routine, many patients may consider using either a water flosser or an air flosser to enhance their oral health routine. Whereas neither a water flosser nor an air flosser can substitute for string floss, both devices can lead to healthier teeth and gums than brushing and flossing alone. The question remains as to which device is best suited for our patients' needs.

Benefits of an Air Flosser

Since air flossers use less water than water flossers, air flossers leave behind a smaller mess for patients to clean after a flossing session. Air flossers tend to be quicker than water flossers as well. Air flossers take up less space than water flossers since they require far smaller water reservoirs. Many models of water flosser come with multiple tips and attachments; these not only allow a patient to reach difficult areas of the mouth, the tips and attachments allow multiple patients to use one water flosser. Air flossers are the optimal choice for patients seeking convenience.

Benefits of a Water Flosser

Water flossers are a great option for patients who have orthodontic work such as braces or headgear. Water flossers are cheaper than air flossers as well. And manufactures for water flossers have had more time to refine and improve their products than the relatively-new air flossers. Finally, water flossers are more effective at removing debris and cleaning teeth and gums than air flossers. Water flossers are the ideal choice for patients that want the most thorough cleaning.
If you have questions or concerns about water flossers or air flossers, contact our office for a consultation. We will weigh your needs and priorities and recommend a mechanical flosser that is right for your oral health.
