![]() New research shows that black tea, the oft-ignored counterpart to the other teas on the market, can actually improve your oral health and make your teeth stronger. What's So Good About Black Tea?Black tea has frequently been dismissed as inferior to other teas, but now is its time to shine. Not only is it a delicious, soothing drink and fantastic with ice on a hot summer's day, black tea can actually deliver fantastic benefits to your mouth.Black tea contains polyphenols. Black tea has compounds called tannins, catechins, and flavonoids, all which work together to improve the quality of your oral health. They are highly anti-microbial, which means that a cup or two of this drink (unsweetened!) can ward off the bacteria in your mouth that can cause cavities, gum disease, and even bad breath. Black tea may also reduce your risk of developing oral cancer. A study out of the National Tea Research Institution of India revealed that the same polyphenols that help minimize your chances of oral infections can also help prevent leukoplakia, a type of oral cancer. Their study demonstrated that it can reverse mutations at the DNA level, effectively preventing this type of cancer from forming in the mouth. If enjoyed with a splash of milk, the calcium in the tea can also help contribute to stronger teeth. Resist the urge to dump a spoonful or two of sugar into your drink, and you can train your taste buds to enjoy this highly beneficial drink! Of course, drinking black tea isn't a substitute for regular dental appointments. Enjoyed in conjunction with other healthy habits such as brushing and flossing, black tea can deliver a host of fantastic benefits.
