![]() What is TMJ?The temporomadibular joint is the joint that connects your jawbone to your skull. Sometimes, when it's been damaged or injured, it can lead to a mild to severe pain disorder called TMJ. Causes of TMJ can include injury, to the teeth or to the jaw, gum chewing, teeth grinding, stress or arthritis and even a misalignment of the teeth.TMJ can be treated at home with ice packs and anti-inflammatory over the counter medications, but it's important that you come into our office for a full checkup and exam before you begin treatment at home. We are able to examine you and determine whether or not you'll need more intense treatment like physical therapy, prescription medications and in severe cases, even surgery to correct the problem. Sometimes something as simple as an ice pack, stretches and avoiding chewing gum can relieve the symptoms of TMJ. Gentle stretches, massage and stress reduction are also effective treatments at home. Our educated staff is very familiar with the symptoms of TMJ and we will partner with you to determine the most effective way to reduce the nerve inflammation, headaches and joint pain that you may be experiencing as a result of your TMJ. Life is too short for you to live with chronic joint pain, locking jaw and inflammation that can be easily managed with the help of our staff.
