Oral health is not just about oral hygiene. What you eat or drink can also have a huge impact on your oral health.
We still recommend that you brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss once a day to remove as much plaque and bacteria as possible. Knowing what are in the things that you eat and drink are just as important.
Your teeth are alive, and they need nutrients. We do not expect you to spend all your time studying nutrition labels, and for the most part you can probably guess a good portion of the things you should stay away from. Here is one that may surprise you. How much cheese does your teeth need? Here is some information to give you a better idea.
What is a Good Amount of Cheese For Healthy TeethWhile milk and yogurt are good neutralizes when it comes to the pH level in foods and drinks that we consume, it turns out that cheese does a better job. You do not have to feel guilty about adding cheddar cheese to your burger.
Cheddar cheese causes you to create more saliva, which is your body's natural acid blocker. It also helps create a protective layer for your tooth enamel for up to 30 minutes after you eat. Milk and yogurt are good for about 10 minutes.
You do not need to chow down on cheese for it to do its job. A good idea when indulging in things like soda, tea, or coffee would be to take small bites here and there, and to always end with cheese. If you want to opt for the low-fat version that is ok too. It is not the fat that protects your teeth, so you will get the same benefit.
Water is still going to be the best option for balancing out the pH levels in your mouth after eating or drinking. A quick swish after eating will help rinse your mouth of food particles, and removing bad acid that can damage your teeth.
If you love your coffee, try to avoid adding sugar. Know that diet soda is no better for you in any way than regular soda and if you must have your wine, enjoy it with some cheese. Please remember to schedule regular office visits.
