Teaching the Elderly About How to Care for New Dentures

Getting new dentures is a great step forward in terms of quality of life for an elderly person who has lost some or all of his or her teeth. Especially in cases where the tooth loss was significant, dentures will allow an elderly person to once again enjoy all the foods that he or she may have had to give up due to difficulty chewing.

However, as with everything else, dentures must be properly cared for in order to ensure their lasting functionality and durability. If you are helping an elderly friend or family member who has just gotten new dentures, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Repetition is Key
Remember that for your elderly friend or family member, it may be necessary to repeat instructions several times. As we age, we lose the ability to recall things as quickly, and short-term memory may become an issue.

Be patient with your senior, and carefully instruct him or her as to the proper way to care for his or her new dentures. Be ready to repeat yourself, and keep in mind that he or she is doing his or her best.

Explain Why Certain Actions are Necessary
You may find that your elderly friend or family member is better able to recall what he or she needs to do if you explain why it is important that he or she take a certain action.

For example, rather than just telling him or her to put the dentures in water overnight, you may find it helpful to explain that the dentures must be kept soft and pliable in the areas where they come into contact with his or her gum tissue, and keeping them wet helps with this.
